Why this goes wrong

Hanging things looks like the easiest job in the house right up until the anchor pulls out of the wall, the second bracket lands a quarter inch low, or a rod that spans eight feet sags in the middle because the only fastening was into drywall. The fix is not strength, it's knowing what's behind the surface and choosing the fastener for it. Drywall, plaster over lath, brick, tile, and plaster over masonry all take completely different hardware, and a stud finder reading through old lath will lie to you.

Blinds, shades and windows you can't reach

We hang blinds and shades inside or outside the frame, cut to fit the opening, with the brackets set so the slats clear the trim and the whole thing operates smoothly. Tall entry windows, transoms, stairwell windows and anything above a landing are the ones people would rather hand off, and those are a normal job with the right ladder. Motorized and cordless shades get installed and set up the same way — cordless is worth asking about if there are young kids in the house.

Curtain rods over wide and tall windows

A long rod is a structural problem in miniature. Wide spans need a center support hit into framing or a proper masonry anchor, or the rod bows under lined drapes within a month. Mounting height matters too — rods set close to the ceiling rather than tight to the frame make a room read taller, and that's a free improvement while somebody is already up there. We'll hang what you bought, or tell you honestly if the hardware in the box won't hold what you're putting on it.

Shelves, mirrors and gallery walls

Floating shelves live or die on their anchoring, and a shelf that carries books is a very different install from one holding a plant. Heavy mirrors get hung on hardware rated for the weight, into framing, and set level. Gallery walls get laid out and spaced before a single hole is drilled — measured on the floor or on paper first, so the wall doesn't end up with a constellation of extra holes. Closet systems and overhead garage racks fall in the same bucket.
