The symptoms people ignore

Almost nobody calls about a dryer vent directly. They call because towels take two cycles, or the laundry room is unusually warm and humid, or the top of the dryer is hot to the touch, or there's a faint burnt smell when a load runs. Those are all the same problem: lint has narrowed the duct until the dryer can't push moist air out, so it runs longer and hotter to do the same work. Longer and hotter is exactly the combination that starts fires, and lint buildup is one of the leading causes of home laundry fires.

Cleaned end to end, not just the elbow

Pulling the dryer out and vacuuming the first two feet is what most people do themselves, and it isn't the problem — the buildup is usually deeper in the run, at the elbows, and right at the exterior flap where lint packs against the louvers. We clean the full duct run with brushes and a vacuum from both ends where we can reach them, clear the exterior vent, and check that the flap opens freely instead of being glued shut with old lint. Then we run the dryer and confirm you can feel real airflow outside.

Crushed ducting and bad connections

Half the vents we open up have a second problem. Flexible foil or plastic duct crushed flat behind the dryer where it was shoved against the wall. A run that came apart inside a wall or ceiling and has been blowing lint and moisture into the cavity. Screws driven through the duct at a joint, catching lint like a comb. Long runs with too many turns. We replace crushed or unsafe sections with proper rigid or semi-rigid duct and connect it with clamps and foil tape rather than screws through the airflow.

Best done before winter

Every dryer works harder in cold months, and this is indoor work, so it's a sensible thing to knock out in fall or winter along with anything else on the list. If we find the run is unsafely long, routed somewhere it shouldn't be, or venting into a crawlspace or attic instead of outside, you'll get told plainly — that's a job for a licensed trade to re-route, not something to improvise, and we'll say so rather than patch it.
