Mariemont was laid out as a complete village in the 1920s and the construction reflects the ambition — solid brick and stucco, heavy plaster over lath, thick original doors, and hardware that still works after a century because it was good to begin with. None of that behaves like modern construction. Anchors that hold fine in drywall are useless here. Doors are heavy enough that a sagging hinge is a real problem rather than a nuisance. Original details are worth keeping

The trim profiles, door hardware, and built-in details in these houses cannot be matched at a big-box store, so the fast fix is usually the wrong one. A missing section of baseboard gets rebuilt to the existing profile. A door that binds gets its hinges shimmed and its edge eased rather than swapped for a hollow-core replacement that would look wrong in the opening.
