Laid out before anything gets drilled
The reason gallery walls go wrong is that people start at the top left and hope. We lay the arrangement out on the floor first, work out the spacing and the centre line, mark it on the wall, and step back with you before a drill comes out. Standard practice is to hang so the centre of the group sits around eye level, and to keep the gaps between frames consistent — small changes that are the whole difference between looking deliberate and looking like it happened over three years. You end up with the holes you need and none of the ones you don't.
Heavy mirrors, and why they're different
A large framed mirror is genuinely heavy, and it is the one thing in the house that hurts somebody if the hanging fails. Those go into wall framing or into anchors properly rated for the weight, on hardware that matches — a wire and a nail is not a mirror hanger. We check what the piece actually weighs, choose the hardware for that, and set it level. The same goes for heavy canvases, shadow boxes, and anything over a bed, a crib, or a sofa where a failure lands on a person.
Plaster, brick and tile
Cincinnati is full of houses where the wall is not drywall, and that changes everything about hanging. Plaster over wood lath crumbles if you drill it wrong and standard anchors spin straight out. Brick and stone need masonry bits and the right plugs, and there is a real difference between drilling the brick and drilling the mortar joint. Tile chips if the bit wanders. All of it is routine for us, and all of it is why the plaster-walled houses in Oakley, Hyde Park and Mariemont produce so many of these calls.
Renting, or just don't want the holes
Not every piece needs a hole. For renters, lightweight pieces, or anything you expect to move again, there are picture-rail hooks, adhesive hangers rated by weight, and leaning arrangements on a shelf or ledge that look intentional rather than temporary. We'll tell you honestly which approach suits the piece and the wall — a heavy mirror is never going on adhesive strips, and anyone who tells you otherwise is going to cost you a mirror.
